Shinji discovers that his father helped Rei in the last accident. Plus, the fifth angel appears and makes the hardest attack on Tokyo-3.
Twenty-two days before the coming of Shinji, at the Nerv headquarters, a test was running: Rei was trying to synchronize with the Eva 00; but something went wrong and the Eva got crazy, the entry plug (the "cockpit") was ejected and the commander-in-chief went inmediatly to rescue the pilot. He saved her life, he could die, but he just lost his glasses.
Good thing that the last angel didn't exploded, now our friends of Nerv has material to investigate, Misato looks, surprised, to the computer while Ritsuko explains that the material that forms the angels are made by particles similar to the light; but the configuration is 99% similar to the human. Shinji is more interested in his father's hand: it looks hurt and Ritsuko tells him that his father saved Rei form an accident, Shinji can't believe it. In the school, Shinji takes a time to look at Rei in the sports classes... although the sick mind of his fellas Kensuke and Tohji. Shinji tells them that he is very suprised about the lack of friends of Rei. His friends reply that only weird people are Eva pilots. Another thing that get our heroe astonished is the good relationship between his father and Rei. At home, Shinji and Misato have a visit from Ritsuko whos doesn't like much the Misato's food, just as a K.O. Pen Pen. Ritsuko uses the chance to give Shinji the Rei's ID card, so he can give it to her the next day; but Misato notes that Shinji takes time looking at Rei's photo, Misato concludes that he has fall in love and tells him that he has an oficcial excuse now. But Shinji replies that he is just thinking how lone his friend is. Ritsuko's commentary end sthe situation: "She is just as your father, they are not good at... living".

Shinji is now at the Rei's department building, he knocks the door; but apparently nobody is there, so Shinji just come in to discover a disaster inside, everything disordered and dirty. Something attracts Shinji: the glasses next to the window, he tries them.. having a really nice surprise, but he doesn't pay attentio to how much Rei love this glasses (they are Gendoh's of course). After this incident, they (Shinji and Rei) go "together" to the headquarters, at the security door Rei can't pass because she doesn't have an updated card situation which is solved by Shinji. At the mechanic stairs Shinji tells Rei that he knows about the accident ans asks her if she is afraid of another accident. Rei replies asking if he trusts on his father, thing that bothers Shinji a lot, who answers: "Who can trust on that man?". Rei faces him and applies a punch in the cheek.
Finally it's time for the Eva-00 reactivaton test, everything seems correct and the borderline is passed. But something unexpected happens, the fifth angel appears over Tokyo-3: the test is canceled and Shinji gets ready to fight in the Eva-01, and when he is reaching the exit a liberation of energy comes from the angel and attacks the Eva, Misato's desperation ends the episode.
