Shinji, overwhelmed by his problems -specially now that he knows about the accident of Tohji's sister- decides to escape and leave his new job, his responsabilities and... friends?.
After all the events, Shinji does not resist and decides to left everything. Misato is totally upset and calls him from the distance "Idiot". She lies Kensuke and Tohji when they went to visit Shinji (he hasn't gone to school by a week), she tells them that he is training. Kensuke and Tohji get very impressed by Misato's beauty.
Very far from the city, Shinji is listening to his best friend: his walkman. At the end of the road, he reaches a conclussion: he should be back. But instead of that, he goes to the cinema and sleeps there (out of money?). The next day Misato checks again... Shinji has not returned. At the headquarters, she tells Ritsuko what happenned after the battle, when she scolded Shinji, when he told her that nobody else can pilot the Eva... so he will do it. Misato reached the conclussion that Shinji must not pilot a Eva. "But we need pilots" replies Ritsuko. Far from the city Shinji found Kensuke, who enjoys playing with his war toys in far places.

The night installs at the mountain and our two friends decides to eat something, they talk about Misato and the Shinji's good luck to live with her and pilot a Eva, about Kensuke wish to be in Shinji's place; Shinji says to Kensuke: "Better not, your mother can get worried"; Kensuke doesn't have mother "I'm like you" he says. The next morning, something gets them up, noise outside the tent: Nerv intelligence is outside and Kensuke can't do anything but see how Shinji is taken. Later, Tohji recriminates him: "Don't you have balls?" before the horror of the female population of the class. Kensuke says to Tohji, that only an idiot fight knowing that he will loose, that isn't a matter of balls.
At Nerv headquarters, Shinji is confined in a dark room, and Misato goes to visit him, Shinji tells her that he pilots the Eva because nobody has said him not to pilot. This phrase convinces Misato that Shinji must not pilot a Eva. Shinji is resigned from his charge at Nerv, also has a conversation with his father who mentions that he is dissappointed because his son is running away.. again. At the train station Tohji and Kensuke, who went to give their "bye" to Shinji, convince him to fist Tohji back; this proposition surprises Shinji a lot; but finally he decides to do it. Then, Shinji tries to escape: but the guards avoid his try, so Shinji just say how much he hates himself. Just when the train is coming, Misato reaches the station... only to see how it goes. When the train is far away she dicovers Shinji, who didn't have the courage to take it. "Okaeri Nasai" (Welcome) is all that she says to him.
