The Eva 01 is severely damaged an it needs to be retired from the battlefield and her pilot sent to th Emergency Room. Later, Misato is testing the abilities of this new angel, it evaporates a representation of the Eva 01 and resisted the impact of a German cannon and inmediatly destroyed it. Meanwhile the angel uses its AT-Field to destroy slowly the 22 defense barriers of Nerv. Exactly at 12:06:54 AM, all of them will be reduced. Misato reaches a conclussion: the attack must be with an incredible amount of energy to go through the AT-Field and out of the angel's range. The name of the operation will be "Yashima" and it will use all the energy of Japan in one shot (180 gigawatts) fired by the Eva-01 from the Futago mountain at 12:00:00 AM. The details are being finished: Ritsuko and Maya are the responsible of the Eva-01 armor and shield; Misato and Rei of the Eva weapon, also a cut out of energy is announced along all the Japanase teritory; now, everything is ready, except the pilot.

Shinji, finally, gets out from the safety line and opens his eyes. Rei is the first visit, she enters and informs him about the operation and what they will do, also she offers him so food. Shinji replies that he doesn't want to pilot a Eva anymore because he has had horrible experiences inside, Rei just says to him that there's no problem she'll pilot the Eva-01, Ritsuko is ready to program the Eva for she, so she retires from Shinji's room: "Sayohnara" is all she says and leaves Shinji thinking alone.

The decisive hour is approaching and the preparatives are finalizing in Japan, the nation is being prepared for the cut out of energy; the third divission of Nerv programs the weapon that will be used: a positronic rifle and the circuits that will support the enormous tension are being tended. Pen Pen, from Misato's apartment, is witness of how the city turns dark and the stars becomes the only visble lights. At the the Futago mountain Shinji receives the order to make fire on the angel (because he has the higher sychronization level) and Rei to defend him with the shield in case the angel attacks. Waiting for the time, Shinji asks Rei why she pilots the Eva; and she answer that it's because it is "in" her, it's part of her, she doesn't have anything else, Shinji doesn't understand and stands hearing the Rei's classic: "Sayohnara".

At last, the clock marks the 00:00:00, and the operation starts; all the energy routes to the Eva's rifle, and Shinji -with the help of th computer- makes the first shot on the angel... at the same time the angel fires on the Eva-01. The attraction force over the two shots, deroutes the both. Nerv people prepares for a second shot; but the angel attacks first on the Eva-01 and Rei is needed to protect it. Shinji desperates in the Eva while the computers programs the shot, when he finally makes the shot and fulminates the angel -just on time-, he hurries to help his friend. Exactly as his father, 22 days earlier, he opens the entry plug and finds Rei hurt inside it and asks her not to say again she has nothing else and Sayohnara again, that it's too sad and then he cries. Rei tells him that she doesn't know what to do in those situations, Shinji replies that why she doesn't try to smile. Then, Rei remembers Gendoh's face and finally smiles; outside, the full moon shines on the sky.
