A series of strange creatures attacks the futuristic city of Tokyo-3; people answer with a new weapon: the Evangelion.
This episode presents us the world as it is supposed to be in the year 2015; people is restoring their life after a big disaster in the year 2000. In this disaster the 80% of the world found himself covered by water: an asteroid crashed with the South Pole, causing the Antartida to melt. Then, going through the sea, Sachiel -the thrid angel- attacks. The UN, with a very strong army, starts a counterattack; but everything -every conventional weapon- is useless against the angel's "AT Field" (later in the series this concept is explained). Ikari Shinji, who didn't went to the refugees, see a strange vission (Rei?) and then he's witness of the Sachiel's wild attack.
Shinji is in the city -don't you obey, fella?-, because he has received a message from a beautiful chick named Misato Katsuragi -well you're forgiven-, so he's waiting her at a public phone. While Misato was looking for Shinji-kun, she lost him of the car radar... GPS?, and finds him just in the moment Sachiel is entering into the city. Doing almost professional maneuvers, they escape. At the headquarters, the UN commanders are trying to fight using all they have; all is helpless, so a crude decission is taken: a N2 bomb will be launched; (after a great demonstration of Sachiel forces) that bomb causes a massive destruction of several kilometers of area, and the commander think they have won: "We're sorry because we let you nothing to do" they says to the commander of the organizaton headquarters.
After turning over her car, Misato and Shinji head the headquarters; and she explains that she is an international officer, and also comments to Shinji that he is very boring, because he is too serious. -after all he's not very different from his daddy, eh?-.
At the entrance Misato and Shinji talks about "Nerv", she tells Shinji that Nerv is an independent branch of the UN, created for trying to "save the world". In other sector of the fortress, the UN officials look frightened how Saquiel, after the N2 explossion, regenerates his material and even gain intelligence. The UN command gives up and decides -finally- to transfer the control of the situation (cowards) to Nerv, and the brilliant commander-in-chief Gendoh Ikari communicates that he will activate the unit 01 -later explained...-. His sub-comandant Kouzou Fuyutsuki opposes because (he believes that) there's no pilot; but Gendoh replies, simply, that one pilot is just coming. Meanwhile, Shinji displays his unsatisfaction of meeting his father to Misato: "he wouldn't call me if he didn't want me to do something". After a few moments, they enter to the GeoFront: a special place -says Misato to Shinji- where the life will rebirth.

Misato and Shinji got lost in the headquarters, so Misato calls Ritsuko doctor (they seem to be old friends) to guide her. When Ritsuko meets Shinji, she also comment what unsocial he seems. "You're in charge of the rest" says Gendoh to Kouzou, while Gendoh is going to meet his son, "their first meeting in three years"; Kouzou thinks, while orders the red alert.
In a secret room (out of the headquarters plane), Ritsuko shows Misato and Shinji the famous unit 01 or Evangelion 01, a giant robot created to proctect, save, bla, bla the mankind and bla, bla, bla and Shinji asks if that is his father's job. Gendoh appears unexpectly, answer "so" and orders to reitre. "But if we don't have pilots" replies Misato; "One has just arrived" answers Ritsuko and tells Shinji that he will pilot the robot, Misato disagrees because Shinji has not received training. Shinji asks Gendoh for an explanation and he says "You were called because you were needed" "Because nobody else can do it", Shinji denies to pilot the giant "robot", "they will explain you how to pilot" "if you're gonna do it, do it; if not go!". In that moment, Sachiel finds the headquarters; and Misato tries to convice or force Shinji (the first) to pilot. Shinji denies again "I can't do it", so Gendoh decides to call the first pilot: Rei.
Gendoh orders Fuyutsuki to call Rei, we can use her while he is alive. Rei -the first child- is taken off her hospital room, however she has had an accident. In this moment we note what kind of person is Shinji, while he's thinking "What miserable I am", loosing time. Then, Sachiel finds the headquarters and shoots a strong cannon trying to penetrate into the defenses. Suddenly, the unit 01 moves his arm and protects Shinji from a ceiling bar that was falling after the attack. Rei falls from her stretcher and Shinji helps her, the Rei blood that he finds on his hand makes him to decide to pilot the unit 01 "I must not escape".
Everything is prepared for the fight: the pilot enters into the Eva in an "entry plug", which is filled with a liquid: the LCL, special for improve the respiration, Shinji surprise when the Eva sincronizes with him: now, he can see, hear and feel through the Eva body (is that convenient?). "Ikari, are you happy with this" asks Fuyutsuki and Genodu smiles silently. The Eva01 exits just in front of Saquiel; while Misato whishes a scary Shinji good luck (well, "come back alive" she said).
